We're getting #BackToBasics
This month-long event in May has been observed in the US since 1949. Join us this year in getting #BackToBasics to provide foundational knowledge about mental health & mental health conditions, and where to access resources if mental health is a concern for you or a loved one.
With the pandemic, social unrest, natural disasters and ongoing violence, the last year (or three) has been a difficult period for everyone.
Forty million people in the US struggle with anxiety disorders. We know that almost half of all adults have a diagnosable mental health condition at some point in their lives, but many never receive treatment. More and more, people who have never experienced mental health challenges find themselves struggling for the first time.
At the same time, an increasing number of people are starting to see mental health for what it truly is: a vital component of your overall health and well-being. With mental health entering more and more of our daily conversations, it’s important that we equip people with the knowledge and language they need to have meaningful conversations and take action if they need it.
That’s why this May, we join Mental Health America (MHA) and its Partners in this year’s theme, #BackToBasics. Throughout the month of May, we’ll be sharing knowledge about mental health & mental health conditions, to help people gain access to the real, tangible resources that can help if their mental health is a cause for concern. While you may not need these resources today, knowing the basics will help you be better prepared if you ever need it.

One of Therapy Notebooks' key goals is to broaden access to mental health tools. While our products are a great resource for many, we recognize that there are individuals who face concerns that are more suited to a traditional therapy model. That's why we're supporting Open Path Psychotherapy Collective, a nonprofit (founded by a therapist) aimed at providing people and families in financial need with affordable therapy.
Since 2013, Open Path has served over 80,000 clients and have a therapist network of over 15,000. In order to serve more clients in need, Open Path needs more therapists on their platform. Open Path has a team of people dedicated to thoroughly vetting clients to ensure they qualify for a sliding scale rate.
Open Path's nonprofit serves clients who lack health insurance or whose health insurance doesn’t provide adequate mental health benefits. These clients also cannot afford current market rates for therapy (between $80-200 a session).
We hope our donation will help more individuals access the care they need.

Factors that Affect Mental Health
There’s often no one single cause for a mental health condition. Instead, there are many possible risk factors that can influence how likely a person is to experience a mental health condition or how serious the symptoms may be.
Some risk factors for mental health conditions include: trauma, which can be a one-time event or ongoing; your environment and how it impacts your health and quality of life (also known as social determinants of health like financial stability and health care access); genetics; brain chemistry; and your habits and lifestyle such as a lack of sleep.
Everyone should have the support needed to thrive. Communities that have been historically and presently oppressed face a deeper mental health burden because of the added impact of trauma, oppression, and harm.
Coming Soon: Dial 988 for Mental Health Crises
Having concerns about your mental health is a common experience. It’s time to make this kind of support just as common. Starting July 16, 2022, you can call 988 – an easy, three-digit phone number to remember.
This resource was created for everyone, including you: if you’re ever feeling like you need help with a mental health or substance use crisis, but not sure if you should call, starting in July, you can just dial 988. It is a direct connection to compassionate, accessible support.
998 will be reachable by call and text, connecting those who need it with trained counselors who will listen and provide resources if necessary.
